Leonardo DiCaprio – Lily Gladstone conquers Cannes, receiving a 9-minute standing standing ovation

On Saturday night (American time), Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was released with the most intense acclaim at the Cannes LHP to date.

The main drama is 3 hours and 26 minutes with the participation of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone tell the story of a dark, largely undiscovered chapter of American history. Even after sitting watching a longer movie Titanic, the crowd was so fascinated that they stood up and clapped for nine minutes.

Cannes clearly loved Leo – who last appeared in Cannes with Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood – and Scorsese, who returned to the film festival for the first time since After Hours 1985. And that’s good news for Apple Original Films, which awarded more than $ 200 million to the director to realize his vision, Hopefully he will bring one of his signature discoveries about crime. While many Scorsese classic films take place on the shabby streets of New York Killers of the Flower Moon set in northeast Oklahoma when members of the Osage State are systematically murdered for sinister purposes.

DiCaprio, De Niro and Jesse Plemons stepped on the red carpet with Scorsese before the premiere, despite the rainy and overcast weather. Cate Blanchett, who won an Oscar for her role as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator greeted Scorsese when he sat down to cheer. But when the film ended, the loudest screams were directed at Gladstone, who played an Osage woman betrayed by her greedy husband. She received many compliments and didn’t hold back tears when the crowd inside the Palais clapped loudly.

When the applause continued to ring after the movie ended, Scorsese held the microphone to speak in front of the crowd.

“Thanks to Osages” – he said – “Everyone is connected to the picture. My old friends are Bob and Leo, Jesse and Lily. We filmed this a few years ago in Oklahoma. It took time to appear but Apple did a great job for us. There is a lot of grass. I am New Yorker. I was very surprised. This is a great experience. We lived in that world”.

The standing ovation may last even longer if the filmmaker is not invited to speak in front of a theater full of people. Scorsese kept saying “thank you” as the crowd continued to cheer. He seemed energetic with the answer, although he also made it clear that he did not like the camera to linger on his side (a risk of the Cannes experience where every movement of A-class attendees was recorded for posterity). Standing around Scorsese, the actors playing Osage members wipe their tears and emotions.

The movie started 45 minutes late but the crowd inside the Palais didn’t seem to be impatient. After all, Killers of the Flower Moon is the festival’s most anticipated film and the most expensive film, one of the moments when Hollywood sent the brightest talents to southern France to honor the art (and flashiness) of filmmaking. And there are tycoons among movie stars – Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, appeared in Cannes to support the company’s breakthrough in filmmaking. When Apple’s banner flashed on the screen after the movie began, the crowd broke out with applause, as opposed to the reception at a media screening.

Overall, the unexpected comedic action of De Niro and DiCaprio, especially the scene where De Niro hits DiCaprio with a racket in Mason’s deserted lodge, was well received with refreshing laughter.

Based on the 2017 book by David Grann Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, Scorsese’s latest work is set in Oklahoma in the 1920s and focuses on a series of murders in Osage Country. The newly formed FBI came to the scene to investigate and uncover a sinister operation. The supporting cast includes Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow (Scorsese also has a cameo with a big round of applause).

Apple and Paramount will release Killers of the Flower Moon in theaters on October 20. The movie will then debut on Apple’s streaming service on an unknown date.

Killers of the Flower Moon not shown at Cannes, so it will not qualify for the Palme d’Or, the highest award of the film festival. Scorsese won the Palm Branch for Taxi Driver and won the director award at Cannes for After Hours.
