What did Messi say when asked about his 9th Golden Ball?

Lionel Messi gave a modest answer when asked if he could win the Golden Ball for the 9th time.

Messi was awarded his eighth Ballon d’Or at a lavish ceremony in Paris after he led Argentina to the World Cup title in Qatar. The Inter Miami captain became the second oldest recipient of the award and beat off competition from youngsters like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Messi will be 37 years old by the time the next Ballon d’Or is awarded. Because he is no longer young, the Barcelona legend believes that this is the last time he will be awarded this noble individual title.

In a recent interview with L’Equipe, Messi said: “Do I dream of a 9th Ballon d’Or? No, no, I stopped thinking about the Ballon d’Or a while ago and winning the Ballon d’Or a while ago. It’s never been my top priority. Especially now that I’ve achieved everything in my career.”

“I think this is the last Ballon d’Or. I am very happy to have achieved everything and become a player with 8 Golden Balls in my career.”

Messi’s first Ballon d’Or came in 2009 and he won it for three more consecutive years before adding other titles to his collection in 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023. 7 His previous Golden Ball is still kept at Barcelona’s museum.

Also in this interview, Messi named the stars he believes will compete for the Golden Ball award in the coming years.

“There could be a very exciting competition in the coming years with players like Haaland, Mbappe, Vinicius and many other young players,” Messi said. I also think that Lamine Yamal will also play a prominent role and fight for it in the future. And there will certainly be others competing because new excellent players will constantly appear.”
